Youth Behavior Policy

The Margaret R. Grundy Memorial Library is a private organization operated under the auspices of The Grundy Foundation and governed by a Board of Trustees.  The Trustees reserve the right to change this Policy of accommodation without notice, and have unfettered discretion to deny any individual or organization access to the Library space, its materials, or programs if it is in the best interests of the Foundation to do so.

Rules in the Library

We wish to make the Grundy Library a welcoming place for all who use the library.  Adults, children and teens are expected to follow the guidelines outlined in our Behavior Policy.  This policy is available at the library and lists the rules and regulations that all must follow.

Unattended Children in the Library

The Grundy Library is a free public library that is open to all.  It is not safe to leave children unattended in any public building.  The library staff has many duties and cannot supervise or assume responsibility for the safety of children left unattended.  The library cannot be used as a substitute for daycare or afterschool care.

  • No child under the age of 7 years may ever be left alone in the library, even for a short period of time.  They must remain within sight distance of an attending parent/guardian or caregiver at all times.  A caregiver is an individual aged 13 or older who is assuming responsibility for a younger child with the permission of the child’s parent or guardian.  This can include siblings, babysitters, or teachers.
  • Children ages 7, 8, or 9 need not be in the immediate presence of a parent or caregiver at the library, but the attending person must be somewhere in the library at all times.
  • Children age 10 and over may use the library unattended, but are expected to follow the rules of the Patron Policy.  Some of these rules include: no loud talking, no running around or in and out of the library; no abusive behavior toward other patrons, library staff, or the library building, furnishings, or materials.  There is no food permitted in the library. Only sealed beverages are allowed.

Anyone not following the Behavior Policy  will be asked to leave the library.  Children are given the opportunity to call home before leaving.  Leaving the library includes the library building, park area and all Grundy Foundation property.
